A 1099 tax calculator estimates the federal tax on contractor income for tax year 2026: self-employment tax plus income tax at your rate, after business expenses. Formula: Profit = gross − expenses; SE tax = 15.3% × 92.35% × profit (Social Security part capped at $184,500); income tax = rate × (profit − SE tax ÷ 2); quarterly = total ÷ 4. On $90,000 of 1099 pay with $15,000 of expenses in the 22% bracket, the estimate is $25,931: $10,597 of self-employment tax and $15,334 of income tax.

How to use the 1099 tax calculator
- Enter gross pay from your 1099-NEC, 1099-K or 1099-MISC forms plus any cash income without a form.
- Enter deductible business expenses.
- Enter your marginal federal income tax rate.
- Read the profit, self-employment tax, income tax, total and quarterly set-aside.
All income counts even if no form arrives. Payers file a 1099-NEC when they pay you $2,000 or more for services in 2026, up from $600 for payments made before 2026, but that is only a reporting line: smaller amounts are still taxable.
What formula does the 1099 tax calculator use?
- Profit = gross 1099 income − business expenses.
- Self-employment tax = 15.3% of 92.35% of profit, with the 12.4% Social Security part limited to the 2026 wage base of $184,500.
- Income tax = your marginal rate × (profit − half of self-employment tax).
- Quarterly set-aside = combined estimate ÷ 4.
Using one marginal rate on all profit is a simplification. The standard deduction and the qualified business income deduction usually lower the real income tax, so treat the 1099 tax calculator figure as a cautious upper estimate.
1099 tax calculator worked example
Results from the 1099 tax calculator:
| Gross | Expenses | Rate | SE tax | Income tax | Total | Per quarter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50,000 | $8,000 | 12% | $5,934.41 | $4,683.94 | $10,618.35 | $2,654.59 |
| $90,000 | $15,000 | 22% | $10,597.16 | $15,334.31 | $25,931.47 | $6,482.87 |
In the second row profit is $75,000. Self-employment tax is $75,000 × 92.35% × 15.3% = $10,597.16. Half of that, $5,298.58, comes off before income tax: 22% × $69,701.42 = $15,334.31.
Expenses that lower 1099 tax
Ordinary and necessary business costs reduce both taxes: software, equipment, a dedicated home office, business mileage at the IRS standard rate, phone and internet use for work, insurance and professional fees. Keep receipts. Personal costs and commuting do not count. Each $1,000 of real expenses saves about $141 of self-employment tax plus income tax at your rate, which a second run of the 1099 tax calculator will show.
Quarterly estimated payments
Contractors have no withholding, so the IRS expects estimated payments on Form 1040-ES if you will owe $1,000 or more. For tax year 2026 they are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Paying at least 100% of last year’s tax (110% if last year’s AGI was over $150,000), or 90% of this year’s, in timely installments generally avoids the underpayment penalty. The quarterly figure from the 1099 tax calculator is a simple even split.
Example: a part-time driver
A part-time rideshare driver receives $30,000 on a 1099-K and drives 18,000 business miles. With mileage and phone costs the driver deducts about $13,000, leaving $17,000 of profit. Self-employment tax is about $2,402. In the 12% bracket, income tax on that profit is about $1,896 before the standard deduction, which may cancel much of it if this is the only income. The 1099 tax calculator shows the self-employment part, which the standard deduction does not reduce.
State tax and other items
The estimate is federal only. Most states also tax contractor profit, and some cities do too. The 0.9% Additional Medicare tax above $200,000 single or $250,000 joint and credits are not included. A 1099 tax calculator is for planning; your Schedule C, Schedule SE and Form 1040 set the final number.
