A body type calculator estimates your body shape (inverted triangle, pear, hourglass, apple or rectangle) from your shoulder, waist and hip measurements. Formula: Ordered ratio rules on S,W,H (cm) assigning athletic, pear, hourglass, apple, or rectangle. Shoulders of 110 cm, a 78 cm waist and 95 cm hips give an inverted triangle.

How to use the body type calculator
- Measure your shoulders, waist and hips with a soft tape.
- Enter all three in the same unit.
- Read your estimated body shape.
How the body type calculator works
The body type calculator compares three measurements, shoulders, waist and hips, and checks their ratios in order. The first rule that matches decides the shape. These shapes describe how your measurements are distributed. They are a styling and fitness vocabulary, not a medical classification, and no official body standard defines them.
- Measure shoulders around the widest point, over the top of the arms.
- Measure the waist at the narrowest point, or just above the belly button, after breathing out.
- Measure hips around the fullest part of the buttocks.
- Use the same unit for all three; the rules use ratios, so centimeters or inches both work.
Body type calculator rules and examples
| Shape | Rule used by the tool | Example (shoulders / waist / hips) |
|---|---|---|
| Inverted triangle | Shoulders ≥ 1.2 × waist and waist ≤ 0.85 × hips | 110 / 78 / 95 cm |
| Pear (triangle) | Hips ≥ 1.15 × waist and shoulders < 1.1 × waist | 88 / 72 / 102 cm |
| Hourglass | Shoulders and hips within 5%, waist < 0.75 × shoulders | 96 / 70 / 98 cm |
| Apple (round) | Waist ≥ shoulders and waist ≥ hips | 100 / 104 / 102 cm |
| Rectangle | None of the above | 95 / 82 / 96 cm |
With the default measurements of 110 cm shoulders, 78 cm waist and 95 cm hips, shoulders ÷ waist = 1.41 and waist ÷ hips = 0.82, so the first rule matches and the result is an inverted triangle, often called an athletic build. Small changes near a boundary can switch the result, so measure twice and treat the shape as a rough label.
Body shapes versus somatotypes
You may also see the terms ectomorph, mesomorph and endomorph. These somatotypes come from 1940s work by William Sheldon, whose ideas about linking body build to personality have been discredited. Sports scientists still use a revised rating system (the Heath-Carter method) that needs skinfold and bone measurements, which this tool does not collect. The body type calculator only describes the outline of your silhouette.
What matters more for health
Where fat is stored does matter. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says a waist measurement over 35 inches (89 cm) for women or over 40 inches (102 cm) for men raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. The “apple” result often reflects a larger waist, so if you see it, it is worth checking your waist on its own against those thresholds and talking to a clinician about your overall risk. The other shapes say little about health.
Using the result
- Clothing: stylists use these shapes to suggest cuts that balance proportions, such as A-line skirts for an inverted triangle.
- Training: shoulder and back work widens the upper body; it cannot change where your body stores fat.
- Tracking: record your measurements every few months; changing ratios are more useful than the label itself.
Limits
Real bodies do not fall neatly into five boxes. Bone structure, muscle and posture all affect the measurements, and two people with the same label can look very different. Use the body type calculator for curiosity and clothing choices, and use waist size, BMI and a doctor’s advice for health questions.
Getting accurate measurements
Most errors come from the tape, not the math. Stand relaxed with your feet together and breathe out normally before measuring your waist; holding your breath or pulling in your stomach can take several centimeters off. Keep the tape level all the way around, which is easiest in front of a mirror or with someone helping. Measure over thin clothing or bare skin, never over a coat or jeans with a thick waistband, and do not pull the tape so tight that it presses into the skin.
Shoulders are the hardest of the three. Wrap the tape around the widest point of the shoulders and upper arms, with your arms hanging by your sides. If you measure only across the back from one shoulder point to the other, you will get roughly half the circumference, and the body type calculator will report the wrong shape. Take each measurement twice and use the average; if the two readings differ by more than 1 cm, measure a third time.

Questions about this calculator
What are the five body shapes?
Inverted triangle, pear, hourglass, apple and rectangle.
Is body shape a medical measure?
No. It describes proportions; waist size is a better health signal.
Do I measure in inches or cm?
Either, as long as all three use the same unit.
Can exercise change my body type?
Training can change muscle and proportions somewhat, but not where your body tends to store fat.
What waist size raises health risk?
Over 35 in for women or 40 in for men, according to NHLBI.
