A grade calculator works out the score you need on a final exam to reach the course grade you want, based on your current grade and how much the final is worth. Formula: needed = (desired – current x (1 – weight/100)) / (weight/100). With 85% now and a 30% final, you need 68.3% to finish with an 80%.

How to use the grade calculator
- Enter your current grade in percent.
- Enter the final’s weight in percent.
- Enter the course grade you want.
- Read the score you need on the final.
What formula does the grade calculator use?
The grade calculator tells you what you need on a final exam or last assignment to reach the overall grade you want. It treats your current grade as the weighted average of everything except the final:
- Needed score = [desired grade − current grade × (1 − w)] ÷ w
- w = the final’s weight as a decimal (30% = 0.30)
Grade calculator worked example
Your current grade is 85% and the final is worth 30% of the course. To finish with 90%, you need (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7%. That is more than 100%, so a 90 is not reachable unless extra credit is available. To finish with 80%, you need (80 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 68.3%.
| Current | Final weight | Goal | Needed on final |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85% | 30% | 90% | 101.7% |
| 85% | 30% | 80% | 68.3% |
| 78% | 25% | 80% | 86.0% |
| 92% | 20% | 90% | 82.0% |
| 70% | 40% | 75% | 82.5% |
| 88% | 50% | 93% | 98.0% |
Results above 100% mean the goal cannot be reached with the final alone. Results below 0% mean you will reach the goal even with a zero, though skipping a final is never a good idea.
What-if planning
Run the grade calculator for each letter-grade cutoff, such as 90, 80 and 70, to see which grade is realistic. If the needed score for an A is 101.7% but a B needs only 68.3%, you know a solid performance secures the B and you can focus your studying on the material most likely to move your score.
Finding your current grade
If your course uses weighted categories, your current grade is the weighted average of the categories completed so far. For example, homework (20% of the course) at 95% and two midterms (50%) at 80% give (0.20 × 95 + 0.50 × 80) ÷ 0.70 = 84.3%. Use that figure as the current grade, with the final’s weight as 30%. If the course uses total points instead, divide points earned by points possible so far.
Check the syllabus
- Confirm the final’s weight; it is often 20% to 40%.
- Check whether the lowest quiz is dropped or the final can replace a midterm score.
- Find the exact cutoffs; some courses round 89.5 up to an A−, others do not.
- Ask whether participation or remaining homework is still to be graded, which changes the math.
Turning the number into a plan
Once the grade calculator shows the score you need, compare it with your recent test scores. If you have averaged 80% on exams and need 68%, keep doing what you are doing. If you need 95%, start early: review past exams, work practice problems, go to office hours and study in short sessions over several days rather than one long night.
Points-based courses
Some classes use total points instead of percentage weights. If 600 of 1,000 course points are graded and you have 510, your current grade is 85%, and the remaining 400 points act like a final worth 40%. To finish at 80% you need 800 points in total, so 290 of the remaining 400, or 72.5%. The grade calculator gives the same answer when you enter 85% current, 40% weight and an 80% goal.
If several assignments remain, treat them as one combined final with their total weight. The needed score is then the average you must earn across all of them, which is often easier to plan for than a single exam.
Rounding and cutoffs
Small differences matter near a cutoff. Ask your instructor whether final grades are rounded, and aim slightly above the needed score to leave room for a tough question.
