How to use the mph to kph converter

  1. Enter the speed in miles per hour, for example 45.
  2. Read the result: 45 × 1.609344 ≈ 72.42 km/h.
  3. For a quick estimate of mph to kmh, multiply by 1.6.

What is the MPH to KPH formula?

kilometers per hour = miles per hour × 1.609344

The reverse is miles per hour = kilometers per hour × 0.62137119 (approximately).

Because the mile is exactly 1.609344 km, 1 mph is exactly 1.609344 km/h.

What are miles per hour and kilometers per hour?

Speed is distance travelled per unit time. The SI unit is the meter per second. Road signs use km/h or mph (1 mph = 1.609344 km/h exactly), and ships and aircraft use knots (1 knot = 1.852 km/h).

  • Mile per hour (mph): 1 mph = 0.44704 m/s (US/Imperial unit).
  • Kilometer per hour (km/h): 1 km/h = 0.2777777778 m/s (Metric unit).

Mph to kph worked examples

  • A 65 mph highway limit: 65 × 1.609344 = 104.607 km/h
  • A 30 mph urban limit: 30 × 1.609344 = 48.2803 km/h
  • 100 mph: 100 × 1.609344 = 160.934 km/h

Treadmill speeds: mph to km/h and pace

US treadmills show mph; running plans often use km/h or minutes per kilometer:

Treadmill mph km/h Pace per km Pace per mile
4 6.44 9:19 15:00
5 8.05 7:27 12:00
6 9.66 6:13 10:00
7 11.27 5:20 8:34
8 12.87 4:40 7:30
10 16.09 3:44 6:00

Paces are rounded to the nearest second. Treadmill belts are calibrated with some tolerance, and running outdoors at the same speed usually feels harder because of wind and terrain, so treat these as guides rather than exact targets for training zones.

Knots, mph and km/h

Aviation and shipping use knots: 1 knot is exactly 1.852 km/h, about 1.15078 mph. A 30 mph wind is about 48.3 km/h or 26.1 kn. Weather services in the US give wind in mph, while marine forecasts use knots and most other countries use km/h or m/s; 1 m/s is exactly 3.6 km/h, about 2.237 mph. Cars sold in the US and UK show mph on the main speedometer scale, with km/h on a secondary scale. Rental cars abroad may show only km/h, so a conversion card on the dashboard helps. Use the kph to mph converter for the reverse and the speed converter for knots and m/s.

Storms and sports

Hurricane categories are defined in mph. Category 1 starts at 74 mph, which is about 119 km/h. Weather agencies outside the US use km/h or knots, so a mph to kph conversion helps compare reports. A pitched baseball at 95 mph is about 153 km/h, and tennis serves are often reported in both units on broadcasts.

The factor 1.609344 is exact, so 60 mph is 96.56 km/h. For a quick estimate, multiply by 1.6.

Wind speed for sailing and aviation is usually given in knots. One knot is 1.852 km/h exactly, and about 1.151 mph, so 20 knots is about 23 mph or 37 km/h. Tornado and hurricane scales use mph in the US, so a mph to kph step is the common way to compare them with other countries’ warnings. Cycling computers and car speedometers can usually switch units, but older models may show only one.

Running speed works too: 6 mph on a treadmill is about 9.7 km/h, a 10-minute mile pace.
