Average RV Loan Rates and How Terms Affect Payments

RV loan rates come from individual lenders, not a published national index. Your rate mostly depends on credit, down payment, the RV’s age and type, and the length of the loan. For a reference point, the Federal Reserve’s G.19 survey showed commercial banks averaging 7.54% on 60-month new car loans and 11.90% on 24-month personal loans in August 2026. Loans on newer motorhomes and travel trailers, secured by the RV, often land closer to the lower figure. Loans on older units, or unsecured loans, often land closer to the higher one.

Here is what lenders look for, what a long term really costs, and how the tax rules treat RV interest.

What affects the RV loan rates a lender quotes?

  • Credit score and payment history
  • Income and debt-to-income ratio
  • Down payment size
  • RV type: motorhome, fifth wheel, travel trailer or camper
  • Model year and condition, since older units are riskier to finance
  • Loan amount and term length

Lenders also ask how you will use the RV. Some will not finance a unit you plan to live in full time, or that you plan to rent out. Others price those uses differently, so say how you will use it upfront.

What do lenders require before quoting RV loan rates?

Expect to provide proof of income, such as pay stubs or tax returns, plus a purchase agreement with the RV’s year, make, model and VIN. For a used RV, the lender may ask for an inspection or appraisal to support the value. You will need insurance in place before the loan closes. Bigger loans may also come with stricter credit and down payment requirements than smaller trailer loans.

How do RV loan rates add up over 15 versus 20 years?

RV loans can stretch much longer than car loans, which keeps payments low but drives up interest. Here is a worked example on a $60,000 RV loan at 8.5% APR, using payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−n):

  • 15 years: about $590.84 a month, or about $46,352 in total interest
  • 20 years: about $520.69 a month, or about $64,967 in total interest

The extra five years lower the payment by about $70 a month but add about $18,615 in interest. RVs also tend to lose value, so a long loan can leave you owing more than the RV is worth for years. Model your own numbers in the RV loan calculator.

Why do RV loan rates differ from the APR?

The CFPB notes that the APR is a broader measure of borrowing cost than the interest rate alone, because it adds certain fees. Low advertised RV loan rates often need excellent credit, a short term or a large loan. Compare APRs for the same amount and term, and ask for the total of payments in writing. The APR calculator shows how fees push up the real rate.

Can you deduct interest on an RV loan?

Possibly. IRS Publication 936 says a home for the mortgage interest deduction includes a house trailer or similar property that has sleeping, cooking and toilet facilities. If your RV has all three and the loan is secured by it as your main home or second home, the interest may count as deductible home mortgage interest. You must itemize, and the publication’s other limits still apply. A tent trailer without a toilet would not meet the test. Check with a tax professional before relying on it. A deduction can lower your tax bill, but it does not change the rate the lender charges.

How does the down payment affect your rate and payment?

A larger down payment reduces the amount at risk, which can help you qualify for lower RV loan rates or a longer term. Even when the rate stays the same, borrowing less saves interest. For example, putting $12,000 down on a $72,000 motorhome keeps the loan at $60,000. Financing the full $72,000 at 8.5% for 15 years would cost about $709 a month instead of $591.

Do RV loan rates differ for new and used units?

New RVs may qualify for promotional financing and longer terms, but they lose value fastest in the first years. Used RVs cost less upfront, but RV loan rates on older units are often higher, and the lender may want an inspection. Run both through the loan calculator with realistic rates, and add insurance, storage, fuel and campground fees to the monthly budget. The fuel cost calculator helps estimate trip costs for a motorhome.

How can you lower the RV loan rates you are quoted?

  • Review your credit reports and correct mistakes before applying
  • Get preapproved by a bank or credit union, then compare dealer financing
  • Pick the shortest term with a payment you can comfortably afford
  • Put at least a meaningful amount down to reduce the loan-to-value ratio
  • Confirm there is no prepayment penalty so you can pay extra later

What should you double-check on the contract?

Truth in Lending disclosures must show the APR, the finance charge, the amount financed and the total of payments. Recompute the payment from those figures. A higher payment than your own math usually means an add-on was included, such as a service contract. Comparing quotes from a few lenders in the same week is the simplest way to secure fair RV loan rates.
