A boat loan calculator works out the monthly payment on a boat from the price, down payment, trade-in, APR and term. Formula: P = price − down − trade. Payment = EMI(P, APR, months). Interest = payment×months − P. Boat loans often run 10 to 20 years. Financing $54,000 at 8.52% APR for 15 years (180 months) costs $532.39 a month and $41,830.67 in total interest. Use the boat loan calculator to compare terms before you shop.

How to use the boat loan calculator
- Enter the boat price, including any trailer, tax and fees you will finance.
- Enter your down payment and trade-in value.
- Enter the APR from your quote and the term in months.
- Read the monthly payment, amount financed, total interest and total cost.
What formula does the boat loan calculator use?
- Amount financed (A) = boat price − down payment − trade-in
- Monthly rate (r) = APR ÷ 12 ÷ 100
- Payment = A × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1), where n is the number of months
If you finance sales tax, registration or a trailer, add them to the price so the amount financed matches your contract.
Current boat loan rates
LendingTree reports an average boat loan APR of 8.52% for offers made in Q3 2026. Averages by credit score:
| Credit score | Average APR |
|---|---|
| 800+ (excellent) | 7.79% |
| 740–799 (very good) | 7.81% |
| 670–739 (good) | 9.14% |
| 580–669 (fair) | 11.08% |
How the term changes your boat payment
Example: $54,000 financed (LendingTree’s average amount financed through its platform in 2025 was just over $54,000) at 8.52% APR.
| Term | Monthly payment | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| 10 years (120 months) | $670.10 | $26,412.06 |
| 15 years (180 months) | $532.39 | $41,830.67 |
| 20 years (240 months) | $469.31 | $58,634.00 |
Stretching from 15 to 20 years lowers the payment by about $63 a month but adds about $16,800 in interest. At fair-credit rates (11.08%), the 15-year payment rises to $616.48.
Boat loan costs the payment leaves out
A boat costs more than its loan. Budget separately for insurance, registration and titling, slip or storage fees, winterizing, fuel and maintenance. Lenders may also require a survey on used boats. Because boats can depreciate quickly, a down payment of 10% to 20% helps you avoid owing more than the boat is worth.
Is boat loan interest tax-deductible?
Possibly. IRS Publication 936 treats a boat as a home if it has sleeping, cooking and toilet facilities. If the boat is your main or second home and the loan is secured by it, the interest may qualify as home mortgage interest when you itemize. Check IRS Publication 936 or a tax professional for your situation.
New vs used boat loans
Used boats usually carry higher rates than new ones because they are more likely to need repairs, and some lenders limit the age of a boat they will finance, for example to boats no more than 25 or 30 years old. Lenders may ask for a marine survey on a used boat. Enter the APR quoted for the actual boat in the boat loan calculator rather than an average.
Paying off a boat loan early
On a simple-interest boat loan, extra payments go to principal and cut the interest you pay later. Run the boat loan calculator with a shorter term to see how much a bigger payment saves: on $54,000 at 8.52%, 10 years instead of 15 saves about $15,400 in interest. Before you sign, ask whether the loan has a prepayment penalty; some boat lenders charge one, and the contract will say so. Comparing two offers? Look at the total interest over the term, not only the payment.
Worked example: $60,000 boat
A buyer finances $60,000 of a boat at 8.5%. Over 10 years the boat loan calculator gives a payment of $743.91 a month and total interest of $29,269.70. Stretching the term to 15 years lowers the payment to $590.84 but raises total interest to $46,351.87, about $17,000 more.
The longer term also means the loan balance falls slowly while the boat loses value, so selling in the first few years may not cover the payoff. Use the boat loan calculator to compare both terms with your budget for fuel, storage and insurance.

Marine loan payment basics
A marine loan (boat loan) payment depends on amount financed, APR, and term in months. Lenders may use marine-specific LTV caps, survey requirements, and longer terms than auto loans. The calculator above estimates a standard amortizing payment for comparison. Confirm whether taxes, registration, trailers, or extended warranties are rolled into the amount financed on your marine loan paperwork.
Marine loan FAQ
Is a marine loan the same as a boat loan? In consumer lending, the terms are often used interchangeably for financing a recreational vessel.
Are marine loan rates the same as auto rates? Not necessarily. Collateral type, term length, and lender specialty programs differ. Use current quotes, not a generic auto average.
Check the assumptions and units before relying on a result. Financial, tax and health estimates do not replace advice for your individual circumstances.
