A car loan interest deduction calculator estimates how much interest on a new personal vehicle loan you can deduct for tax year 2026 and what it saves. Formula: Deduction = max(0, min(interest, $10,000) − $200 × each $1,000 of MAGI over $100,000 ($200,000 joint)); saving = deduction × marginal rate. The limit is $10,000 a year. A single filer who pays $3,200 of qualifying interest with $90,000 of MAGI deducts all of it and saves $704 in the 22% bracket.

How to use the car loan interest deduction calculator
- Enter the qualified interest you paid in the year. Your lender’s year-end statement shows it.
- Choose your filing status and enter your modified adjusted gross income.
- Enter your marginal federal tax rate.
- Read the deduction after the $10,000 cap and the phaseout, and the estimated saving.
What formula does the car loan interest deduction calculator use?
- Capped interest = the smaller of interest paid and $10,000.
- Phaseout = $200 for each $1,000 of MAGI above $100,000 ($200,000 for a joint return).
- Deduction = capped interest minus the phaseout, never below zero.
- Saving = deduction × marginal rate.
The phaseout is steep. Every $1,000 of income over the line removes $200 of deduction, so a single filer with $3,200 of interest loses all of it by $116,000 of MAGI.
Car loan interest deduction calculator worked example
Each row was run through the car loan interest deduction calculator at a 22% rate:
| Filer | Interest paid | MAGI | Deduction | Saved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | $3,200 | $90,000 | $3,200 | $704 |
| Single | $3,200 | $110,000 | $1,200 | $264 |
| Single | $3,200 | $120,000 | $0 | $0 |
| Single | $12,000 | $60,000 | $10,000 | $2,200 |
| Joint | $12,000 | $230,000 | $4,000 | $880 |
In the last row, MAGI is $30,000 over the joint line, so the $10,000 cap is reduced by 30 × $200 = $6,000.
Which car loans qualify?
The IRS lists these conditions for tax years 2025 through 2028:
- The loan was originated after December 31, 2024 and is secured by the vehicle.
- The vehicle is new (its original use starts with you) and its final assembly took place in the United States.
- It is a car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup or motorcycle under 14,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, bought for personal use.
- You report the vehicle identification number on your return.
Lease payments, used vehicles and business vehicles do not qualify. A car loan interest deduction calculator cannot check final assembly, so look for the plant on the window sticker or the NHTSA VIN decoder.
Refinanced loans and how to claim
Interest on a refinance can count if the new loan refinances a qualifying loan and is secured by the same vehicle. The deduction is claimed on Schedule 1-A and does not require itemizing. Lenders report the interest on an information return. Enter the yearly total from that form into the car loan interest deduction calculator, not the payment amount, because most of each early payment is interest but later payments are mostly principal.
Example: a family buying an SUV
A married couple buys a new SUV assembled in Kentucky in March 2026 with a $45,000 loan at 6.9% over 60 months. Their lender reports about $2,300 of interest for the first year. Their joint MAGI is $185,000, which is under the $200,000 line, so the full $2,300 is deductible. At a 22% marginal rate that saves about $506.
If the same couple’s MAGI were $205,000, the deduction would fall by 5 × $200 = $1,000, leaving $1,300. Bonuses and capital gains count toward MAGI, so check the result again late in the year.
Does the deduction change which car to buy?
It rarely should. A $35,000 loan at 7% has about $2,350 of interest in the first year, which saves roughly $517 at 22%. That is less than many price gaps between models.
