How to use the feet to inches converter

  1. Enter the length in feet, for example 7.25.
  2. Read the feet to inches converter result: 7.25 × 12 = 87 in.
  3. For feet and inches, multiply the feet and add the inches: 5 ft 4 in = 60 + 4 = 64 in.

What is the feet to inches formula?

inches = feet × 12

The reverse is feet = inches × 0.083333333 (approximately).

The inch, foot, yard and mile are defined exactly in meters (1 in = 2.54 cm, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 yd = 0.9144 m, 1 mi = 1,609.344 m), so these factors are exact.

What are feet and inches?

Length measures distance. The SI base unit is the meter. Since 1959 the international inch has been defined as exactly 2.54 cm, so the foot is exactly 0.3048 m and the mile exactly 1,609.344 m.

  • Foot (ft): 1 ft = 0.3048 m (US/Imperial unit).
  • Inch (in): 1 in = 0.0254 m (US/Imperial unit).

Feet to inches worked examples

  • 5.5 feet: 5.5 × 12 = 66 in
  • A 3-foot (one-yard) length: 3 × 12 = 36 in
  • An 8-foot board: 8 × 12 = 96 in

Inches and centimeters per foot

Because 1 in = 2.54 cm exactly, 1 ft = 12 in = 30.48 cm:

Multiply inches by 2.54 for centimeters. Builders in the US often write lengths like 8′ 6″, with a single prime for feet and a double prime for inches; that length is 102 in or 259.08 cm. Lumber lengths come in even feet, so a 10 ft board is 120 in before trimming. Tape measures usually mark every foot in red or with a special label, which makes the 12-inch steps easy to count.

Height in total inches

Medical charts and some forms ask for height in inches. 5 ft 2 in = 62 in, 5 ft 10 in = 70 in and 6 ft 1 in = 73 in. Body mass index formulas in US units use this total: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)². Use the inches to feet converter for the reverse and the feet to cm converter for metric heights.

Curtains and trailers

Curtain panels are sold in standard lengths of 84, 96 and 108 inches, which are 7, 8 and 9 feet. To choose, measure from the rod to the floor in feet, then use feet to inches to match a panel. A 9 ft ceiling with the rod near the top usually needs 108 inch panels.

Vehicle widths are regulated in inches in the US. The maximum width for most trailers on highways is 102 inches, which is 8.5 feet. A trailer quoted as 8 ft 6 in wide fits that limit exactly.

For decimals, multiply the fraction of a foot by 12: 6.75 ft is 6 feet and 9 inches, or 81 inches in total.

Lumber is sold by the foot, but plans are drawn in inches. A 10 ft board is 120 inches, enough for two 58 inch shelves with room for saw cuts. Always add about 1/8 inch per cut for the blade.
