To convert feet to meters, multiply by 0.3048: the international foot is exactly 0.3048 m. For example, 10 ft = 3.048 m, and 6 ft ≈ 1.829 m.

How to use the feet to meters converter

  1. Enter the length in feet, for example 25.5.
  2. Read the result: 25.5 × 0.3048 = 7.7724 m.
  3. For feet and inches, convert the inches too: 5 ft 9 in = 5.75 ft = 1.7526 m.

What is the feet to meters formula?

meters = feet × 0.3048

The reverse is feet = meters × 3.2808399 (approximately).

The inch, foot, yard and mile are defined exactly in meters (1 in = 2.54 cm, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 yd = 0.9144 m, 1 mi = 1,609.344 m), so these factors are exact.

What are feet and meters?

Length measures distance. The SI base unit is the meter. Since 1959 the international inch has been defined as exactly 2.54 cm, so the foot is exactly 0.3048 m and the mile exactly 1,609.344 m.

  • Foot (ft): 1 ft = 0.3048 m (US/Imperial unit).
  • Meter (m): the base unit used here for length.

Feet to meters worked examples

  • A 6-foot person: 6 × 0.3048 = 1.8288 m
  • A 10-foot ceiling: 10 × 0.3048 = 3.048 m
  • 1,000 ft of altitude: 1,000 × 0.3048 = 304.8 m

Conversion chart

ft m ft m
1 0.3048 12 3.6576
2 0.6096 15 4.572
3 0.9144 20 6.096
4 1.2192 25 7.62
5 1.524 50 15.24
6 1.8288 100 30.48
8 2.4384 500 152.4
10 3.048 1,000 304.8

Values are rounded to four decimal places, or two for results of 100 or more.

Quick mental conversion

Multiply by 0.3 for a quick estimate (it understates by about 1.6%): 20 ft ≈ 6 m (exact 6.10 m).

Feet and inches to meters

Height Meters
5 ft 0 in 1.524
5 ft 4 in 1.626
5 ft 8 in 1.727
6 ft 0 in 1.829
6 ft 4 in 1.930

Convert to total inches first, then multiply by 0.0254.

Feet from meters: reverse chart

Going the other way, feet = meters × 3.2808399. Common values:

meters feet
1 3.28084
2 6.56168
5 16.4042
10 32.8084
20 65.6168
50 164.042
100 328.084
500 1,640.42
1,000 3,280.84

Altitudes from feet to meters

Aviation and US maps give heights in feet:

Height Feet Meters
Denver, “Mile High City” (official marker) 5,280 1,609.3
Typical airliner cruise level (flight level 350) 35,000 10,668
Cabin pressure altitude limit for most airliners 8,000 2,438.4
10,000 ft (oxygen rules in many countries) 10,000 3,048

One mile is exactly 5,280 ft, which is 1,609.344 m. Pilots outside North America and the former Soviet states mostly still use feet for altitude, while runway lengths and visibility are often given in meters, so both units appear on the same chart. A quick check is that 1,000 ft is about 305 m.

Square feet to square meters

For areas, square the factor: 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² exactly. A 2,000 sq ft house is about 185.8 m², and a 12 × 15 ft room (180 ft²) is about 16.72 m². For volumes, cube the factor: 1 ft³ = 0.028316846592 m³, so a 10 × 10 × 8 ft room holds about 22.65 m³ of air. Use the area converter for other units, the meters to feet converter for the reverse and the feet to cm converter for heights.

Boats, trees and rooms

Boat lengths are quoted in feet in the US and in meters in Europe. A 30 ft boat is 9.14 m, and many marinas charge by the meter, so a feet to meters conversion is the first step in comparing berth prices. Rounding up matters here: most marinas bill the next whole meter.

Tree heights are given either way. A 100 ft tree is 30.48 m. Ceiling heights follow the same factor: a 10 ft ceiling is about 3.05 m, while a 9 ft ceiling is about 2.74 m.

Because 0.3048 is exact, a quick rule of dividing feet by 3.28 gives almost the same result.

Swimming pool depths are posted in feet in the US and meters elsewhere. A pool marked 9 ft deep at the deep end is 2.74 m, and a 3 ft 6 in shallow end is about 1.07 m. Diving boards usually need a minimum depth set by local codes, so a feet to meters conversion is needed when reading a code written in the other unit.
