To convert yards to meters, multiply by 0.9144, because the international yard is defined as exactly 0.9144 m. For example, 100 yd = 91.44 m, and 25 yd = 22.86 m.

How to use the yards to meters converter

  1. Enter the length in yards, for example 440.
  2. Read the result: 440 × 0.9144 = 402.336 m.
  3. For a quick estimate, subtract about 9%: 440 − 40 = 400 m.

What is the yards to meters formula?

meters = yards × 0.9144

The reverse is yards = meters × 1.0936133 (approximately).

The inch, foot, yard and mile are defined exactly in meters (1 in = 2.54 cm, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 yd = 0.9144 m, 1 mi = 1,609.344 m), so these factors are exact.

What are yards and meters?

Length measures distance. The SI base unit is the meter. Since 1959 the international inch has been defined as exactly 2.54 cm, so the foot is exactly 0.3048 m and the mile exactly 1,609.344 m.

  • Yard (yd): 1 yd = 0.9144 m (US/Imperial unit).
  • Meter (m): the base unit used here for length.

Yards to meters worked examples

  • An American football field between goal lines: 100 × 0.9144 = 91.44 m
  • A 25-yard pool: 25 × 0.9144 = 22.86 m
  • One mile: 1,760 × 0.9144 = 1,609.34 m

1 0.9144 100 91.44
2 1.8288 150 137.16
3 2.7432 200 182.88
5 4.572 300 274.32

20 18.288 500 457.2
25 22.86 1,000 914.4
50 45.72 1,760 1,609.34

Values are rounded to four decimal places, or two for results of 100 or more.

Quick mental conversion

Subtract about 9%: 100 yd ≈ 91 m (exact 91.44 m).

Swimming pool distances

US high school and college pools are often 25 yards long, while international competition uses 25 m (short course) and 50 m (long course) pools. A 25 m length is about 9.4% longer than a 25 yd length. Distances only:

Yards Meters
25 22.86
50 45.72
100 91.44
200 182.88
500 457.2
1000 914.4
1650 1,508.76

Converting race times between pool types is not a fixed ratio, because turns and pool length change the result; this table covers distance only.

Football fields and fabric

An American football field is 100 yd between the goal lines, 91.44 m, and 120 yd including end zones, 109.73 m. Golf courses give hole lengths in yards in the US and UK, and fabric is sold by the yard in the US: 3 yd of fabric is 2.743 m. Track and field moved from yards to meters long ago, which is why the 440-yard run became the 400 m; 440 yd is 402.336 m, so the old race was slightly longer. In the UK, road signs still give short distances in yards, such as a junction in 300 yd (274.32 m). Use the meters to yards converter for the reverse and the feet to meters converter for shorter lengths.

Golf, archery and concrete

Golf holes are measured in yards on most US and UK cards. A 400 yard par four is about 366 m. Archery and shooting ranges use both units: 100 yards is 91.44 m, so a target set at 100 m is about 9 yards further away. A yards to meters conversion helps when you compare scores from ranges set in different units.

Concrete and soil are sold by the cubic yard in the US. Three cubic yards is about 2.29 cubic meters. Because the conversion is cubed, the factor is 0.7646, not 0.9144.

Running tracks in the US were once 440 yards around, which is 402.3 m, slightly more than today’s 400 m track. Old records over yard distances are kept separately for that reason. Football fields still use yards, and the 100 yards between goal lines is 91.44 m. A yards to meters conversion of a play’s gain is a nice way to explain American football to metric fans.
