Height Converter

A height calculator converts a height in centimeters into feet and inches, the format used in the United States. 175 cm is about 5 ft 9 in, or 68.9 inches.

How to use the height calculator

  1. Enter your height in centimeters.
  2. Read the result in feet and inches, total inches and meters.

What is the height conversion formula?

The height calculator converts a height in centimeters into feet and inches. The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters, and there are 12 inches in a foot:

  • Inches = centimeters ÷ 2.54
  • Feet = whole number of (inches ÷ 12)
  • Remaining inches = inches − feet × 12
  • Centimeters = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54

The calculator rounds to the nearest whole inch before splitting into feet, so 182.8 cm shows as 6 ft 0 in rather than 5 ft 12 in.

Height calculator worked example

175 cm ÷ 2.54 = 68.9 inches. 68.9 ÷ 12 = 5 feet with 8.9 inches left over, which rounds to 9 inches, so 175 cm is about 5 ft 9 in. Going the other way, 5 ft 9 in is 69 inches × 2.54 = 175.3 cm.

Centimeters Feet and inches Total inches
150 cm 4 ft 11 in 59.1 in
155 cm 5 ft 1 in 61.0 in
160 cm 5 ft 3 in 63.0 in
165 cm 5 ft 5 in 65.0 in
170 cm 5 ft 7 in 66.9 in
175 cm 5 ft 9 in 68.9 in
180 cm 5 ft 11 in 70.9 in
185 cm 6 ft 1 in 72.8 in
190 cm 6 ft 3 in 74.8 in
200 cm 6 ft 7 in 78.7 in

How to measure height accurately

  1. Stand barefoot on a hard floor with your back against a flat wall.
  2. Keep heels together, legs straight and shoulders level, looking straight ahead.
  3. Have someone place a flat object, like a book, on top of your head at a right angle to the wall.
  4. Mark the wall under it and measure from the floor to the mark.

Height is usually 1 cm or more greater in the morning than in the evening because spinal discs compress during the day, so measure at the same time of day if you are tracking changes.

Where conversions come up

  • Medical and fitness forms that ask for height in one system while you know it in the other
  • BMI and healthy weight calculations, which use meters or inches
  • Travel documents, dating profiles and sports rosters
  • Buying bikes, clothing and furniture sized by height

Children’s height

For children, doctors compare height with growth charts by age and sex to see how growth is tracking over time. A single conversion does not show whether a child is growing normally; a pediatrician looks at the trend across visits. Predictions of adult height from parents’ heights are rough estimates with a wide margin.

Precision

Rounding to the nearest inch can shift a height by up to 1.27 cm. If you need more precision, use the total inches with a decimal that the height calculator also shows, or convert inches back with the exact factor of 2.54. NIST notes that the international inch has been defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters since 1959.

Height in health checks

Height matters most in health care when it is combined with weight. Body mass index divides weight in kilograms by height in meters squared, so a small error in height changes the result more than the same error in weight. An error of 2 cm on a 170 cm adult moves BMI by about 2%, which can be enough to cross a category line. For that reason, clinics measure height with a fixed stadiometer rather than asking patients, and people tend to overstate their height by a centimeter or two when they report it themselves.

Adults usually reach their final height in their late teens or early twenties, after the growth plates in the long bones close. From about age 40, many people slowly lose height as spinal discs thin and posture changes, and the loss can speed up later in life. Tracking your measured height every few years, at the same time of day, gives a fair record. Convert each reading once and keep the original centimeters as well, so rounding never builds up.

Quick checks with the height calculator

Use the height calculator to double-check a form before you submit it. A common slip is typing 5.9 feet when you mean 5 feet 9 inches; 5.9 feet is really 5 feet 10.8 inches, or about 180 cm. The height calculator avoids that by giving whole feet and inches. For the reverse direction, multiply total inches by 2.54. If a sports roster or a driver’s license lists your height one way and a doctor’s chart lists it another, the height calculator shows whether the two records actually agree.
