Name Compatibility Calculator

Entertainment only. Deterministic name-hash fun score - not scientific or relationship advice.

A love calculator turns two names into a fun compatibility score from 0% to 100%. Formula: Lowercase and sort the two names, join with “:”, hash = (hash × 31 + charCode) >>> 0, score = hash mod 101. Alex and Sam score 32%. It is a game for entertainment, not a real test.

How to use the love calculator

  1. Enter the first name.
  2. Enter the second name.
  3. Read the fun score, then try the names in the other order.

How the love calculator works

The love calculator is a name game. It joins the two names in lower case, turns the letters into a number with a simple hash, and takes the remainder after dividing by 101 to get a score from 0% to 100%. The same names always give the same score, which makes it fun to share, but the number has nothing to do with real compatibility.

  • Text = the two names in alphabetical order, joined by “:”, in lower case
  • Hash = repeat hash × 31 + letter code for each character
  • Score = hash mod 101

Love calculator worked example

For Alex and Sam the love calculator gives 32%. Swap the order to Sam and Alex and the score stays 32%, because the names are sorted before hashing. Capital letters and spaces at the start or end make no difference. Try nicknames, full names or the names of pets and fictional characters; every pair gives its own repeatable number.

Name 1 Name 2 Score
Alex Sam 32%
Sam Alex 32%
Jordan Taylor 14%

Why it is not science

Names do not predict how two people get along. Research on lasting relationships points to things like trust, respect, communication and handling conflict, none of which a name game can measure. Treat the love calculator as an icebreaker, a party game or a bit of fun with friends, not as a reason to start or end a relationship.

Name games through history

People have played name and letter games about love for a long time. FLAMES, a playground game, crosses out shared letters and counts the rest to land on friends, lovers, affection, marriage, enemies or siblings. Another version counts the letters in “loves” across both names and adds digits until two remain. Online love tests are the modern version: quick, silly and the same every time you try them.

Ways to use it

  • Compare celebrity couples or characters from a book or show.
  • Use it as a party game, then show that the order of names does not change the score.
  • Teach a coding class how a hash function turns text into numbers.

For entertainment only. The score is a fixed name game, not science or relationship advice.

How the name hash works

A hash function turns text of any length into a number. This one starts at 0 and, for each character, multiplies the running total by 31 and adds the character’s code, keeping only the last 32 bits. The same idea is used in many programming languages to put words into lookup tables quickly. Because each step multiplies by 31, the position of every letter matters, which is why adding a middle name can move the score a long way; the names are sorted first, so their order does not matter.

Taking the remainder after dividing by 101 squeezes the large number into the range 0 to 100. The result looks random but is fully repeatable. That makes the love calculator a neat, harmless example of how computers turn words into numbers, and a good starting point for a beginner programming lesson.

What actually helps relationships

The American Psychological Association notes that healthy relationships depend on communication, support and handling stress together. Talking openly, showing appreciation, sharing tasks fairly and making time for each other matter far more than any score. If a relationship is causing distress, a licensed counselor or therapist can help. Couples counseling is not only for crises; many couples use it to learn better ways to talk and plan together.

Formula and method

Lowercase and sort the two names, join with “:”, hash = (hash × 31 + charCode) >>> 0, score = hash mod 101.

Deterministic novelty hash; the same pair in either order gives the same score. Not psychology or relationship science.
