Tip Calculator

A tip calculator multiplies the bill by the tip percentage: tip = bill × (percent ÷ 100). A 20% tip on a $64 bill is $64 × 0.20 = $12.80, for a total of $76.80. Split four ways, each person pays $19.20.

How to use the tip calculator

  1. Enter the bill amount, before or after tax as you prefer.
  2. Enter the tip percentage, for example 18.
  3. Enter the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. Read the tip, the total and each person’s share of the total and tip.

Use the tip calculator for restaurants, delivery and services.

What is the tip formula?

  • Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100
  • Total = bill + tip
  • Per person = total ÷ number of people

Example for an $85 bill at 18% split between 3 people: tip = $85 × 0.18 = $15.30; total = $100.30; per person = $33.43.

Tip table

Bill 15% 18% 20% 25%
$20 $3.00 $3.60 $4.00 $5.00
$40 $6.00 $7.20 $8.00 $10.00
$60 $9.00 $10.80 $12.00 $15.00
$80 $12.00 $14.40 $16.00 $20.00
$100 $15.00 $18.00 $20.00 $25.00
$150 $22.50 $27.00 $30.00 $37.50
$200 $30.00 $36.00 $40.00 $50.00

Mental math shortcuts

  • 10%: move the decimal one place left ($64 → $6.40).
  • 20%: double the 10% figure ($6.40 × 2 = $12.80).
  • 15%: 10% plus half of 10% ($6.40 + $3.20 = $9.60).
  • 25%: divide the bill by 4 ($64 ÷ 4 = $16).

Should you tip on the pre-tax or after-tax amount?

Etiquette guides such as the Emily Post Institute suggest tipping on the pre-tax bill, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small: on a $60 bill with 8% tax, a 20% tip is $12.00 on the pre-tax amount and $12.96 on the total. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.

How much to tip in the United States

Customs vary by service, and none of these are legal requirements. Common guidelines:

Service Common tip
Sit-down restaurant 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill
Bartender $1 to $2 per drink, or 15% to 20% of the tab
Food delivery 15% to 20%, with a minimum of a few dollars
Hair stylist or barber 15% to 20%
Taxi or rideshare 15% to 20%
Hotel housekeeping A few dollars per night

Check the bill for an automatic service charge, which is common for large groups. If one is already added, you do not need to tip that percentage again.

Outside the United States, tipping norms differ. In the UK a 10% to 12.5% service charge is often added to restaurant bills, and in many European countries rounding up is common.

Are tips taxed in 2026?

Tips are still taxable income that must be reported, but for tax years 2025 to 2028 eligible workers in occupations that customarily receive tips can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips a year, whether or not they itemize. The deduction shrinks by $100 for each $1,000 of modified AGI above $150,000 ($300,000 for joint filers). Social Security and Medicare taxes still apply. See the IRS page What the “No Tax on Tips” deduction means for you.

Splitting the bill with a tip

Groups often need the tip and the split at the same time, which a tip calculator handles in one pass. Take a dinner bill of $86.40 for four people. A 20% tip is $17.28, so the total is $103.68 and each share is $25.92. At 18% the tip is $15.55, the total $101.95 and each share about $25.49. The tip calculator does this in one step when you enter the number of people.

A few habits avoid arguments at the table:

  • Agree on the percentage before anyone pays, then round each share up to the next dollar rather than down.
  • If one person ordered much more, split by what each ordered and apply the same tip percentage to each part.
  • Check the receipt for an automatic service charge, common for groups of six or more. If one is included, you do not need to add a full tip on top.
  • When paying by card, write the tip and the total clearly so no one can change the figure.

Use the tip calculator for the arithmetic. For delivery, counter service and other situations where norms vary, the tip calculator still does the math; you only decide the rate.
