Roofing Calculator

A roofing calculator converts roof area into roofing squares, the 100 sq ft unit used to buy shingles. Formula: Adjusted sq ft = area × pitch factor × (1 + waste pct/100). Squares = adjusted / 100. An 1,800 sq ft footprint at a 6/12 pitch with 10% waste needs about 22.14 squares.

How to use the roofing calculator

  1. Enter the roof footprint in square feet.
  2. Enter the pitch factor (1.118 for 6/12).
  3. Enter a waste percentage.
  4. Read the squares and adjusted area.

How the roofing calculator works

The roofing calculator turns a roof’s footprint into roofing squares. A square is the trade unit for roofing material and covers 100 square feet of roof. You enter three things: the area, a pitch factor and a waste allowance. The tool then applies:

  • Adjusted area = area × pitch factor × (1 + waste ÷ 100)
  • Squares = adjusted area ÷ 100

The pitch factor converts flat, plan-view area into the larger sloped surface. Waste covers cuts at hips, valleys, rakes and starter rows. The result shows squares to two decimals and the adjusted square feet.

Roofing calculator worked example

A house has an 1,800 sq ft footprint including the overhangs, and a 6/12 pitch. The pitch factor for 6/12 is about 1.118. With 10% waste, the roofing calculator gives 1,800 × 1.118 × 1.10 ≈ 2,214 sq ft, or 22.14 squares. Most architectural shingles come three bundles to a square, so you would order 67 bundles: 22.14 × 3 = 66.4, rounded up.

Footprint sq ft Pitch factor Waste Squares
1,800 1.000 (flat) 10% 19.80
1,800 1.118 (6/12) 10% 22.14
1,800 1.202 (8/12) 10% 23.80
2,000 1.118 (6/12) 15% 25.71
2,400 1.054 (4/12) 10% 27.83

Pitch factors

Pitch is the rise in inches per 12 inches of run. The factor equals √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12. Common values are 1.054 for 4/12, 1.083 for 5/12, 1.118 for 6/12, 1.158 for 7/12, 1.202 for 8/12, 1.302 for 10/12 and 1.414 for 12/12. A low-slope roof is close to 1.0. The default of 1.12 matches a 6/12 roof. The calculator accepts any factor you type, so check it against your pitch before ordering.

How much waste to allow

A simple gable roof often needs about 10% extra. A hip roof, or one with dormers, valleys and many cuts, can need 15% or more. Starter strips and ridge caps are often bought separately, so do not count on the waste allowance to cover them. Leftover full bundles are handy for repairs later.

Measuring safely

You can get the footprint from the ground: measure the outside walls, add the overhang on each side and multiply length by width. That avoids climbing onto the roof. Plans, a survey or satellite measuring services can also give the area. For complex roofs, total each plane separately and then add them together. The roofing calculator works with the total of any shape.

From squares to materials

Many asphalt shingle products cover one square with three bundles, but some heavier shingles use four or five. Check the coverage printed on the wrapper. Underlayment rolls, nails and flashing are also sold by coverage, so the square count from the roofing calculator is the starting point for every line on the materials list. Local codes may require ice barrier, drip edge or a second underlayment layer on low slopes.

Limits of the estimate

The roofing calculator accepts a pitch factor from 1.00 for a flat roof to 2.00 and a waste allowance from 0% to 50%, and it rejects values outside those ranges, so an obvious typo is caught. It does not price labour, tear-off, disposal or decking repair. Treat the result as a quantity estimate and get quotes from licensed roofers. Roof work is dangerous; use fall protection or hire a professional.

Tips

  • Include overhangs in the footprint.
  • Use the pitch factor that matches your roof slope.
  • Round up to whole bundles.
  • Estimate each roof plane separately when pitches differ.

Formula and method

Adjusted sq ft = area * pitch_factor * (1 + waste_pct/100). Squares = adjusted / 100.

Pitch factor scales plan area toward roof surface. Waste percent adds cutting allowance. One square = 100 sq ft of roofing.

Questions about this calculator

What is a roofing square?

100 square feet of roof surface.

How many bundles are in a square?

Often three for asphalt shingles; check the wrapper.

What is the pitch factor for 6/12?

About 1.118.

How much waste should I add?

About 10% for simple roofs and 15% or more for complex ones.
