A sleep calculator suggests bedtimes that fit whole 90-minute sleep cycles before your wake-up time. Formula: wake minutes = wake h × 60 + wake m. For cycles in 6..3: bed = wake minutes – fall asleep – cycles × 90; while bed < 0: bed += 1440. Format HH:MM with cycle count. To wake at 7:00 AM after five cycles, with 15 minutes to fall asleep, go to bed at 11:15 PM.

How to use the sleep calculator
- Enter your wake-up hour and minutes.
- Enter how long you take to fall asleep.
- Read the suggested bedtimes for 6 to 3 cycles.
How the sleep calculator works
The sleep calculator suggests bedtimes that let you wake at the end of a sleep cycle rather than in the middle of one. You enter your wake-up time and how long you usually take to fall asleep. It counts back in 90-minute cycles:
- Bedtime = wake time − time to fall asleep − cycles × 90 minutes
It lists bedtimes for 6, 5, 4 and 3 cycles, which is 9, 7.5, 6 and 4.5 hours of sleep. The first suggestion, 6 cycles, is the earliest. Times use a 24-hour clock in the tool.
Sleep calculator worked example
You need to wake at 7:00 AM and usually fall asleep in 15 minutes. For five cycles, the sleep calculator subtracts 7.5 hours and 15 minutes, giving a bedtime of 11:15 PM. Six cycles means going to bed at 9:45 PM, and four cycles at 12:45 AM. The table assumes 15 minutes to fall asleep, except the last row, which uses 20.
| Wake | Cycles | Bedtime | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7:00 AM | 6 | 9:45 PM | 9 h |
| 7:00 AM | 5 | 11:15 PM | 7.5 h |
| 7:00 AM | 4 | 12:45 AM | 6 h |
| 6:30 AM | 5 | 10:45 PM | 7.5 h |
| 8:00 AM | 5 | 12:10 AM | 7.5 h |
About sleep cycles
During the night you move through non-REM sleep and REM sleep. According to the NHLBI, the cycle starts over every 80 to 100 minutes, and there are usually four to six cycles per night. The sleep calculator uses 90 minutes as a typical length. Your own cycles vary from night to night and through the night, so treat the times as a guide, not an exact schedule.
How much sleep you need
Adults generally need 7 or more hours a night, and the NHLBI notes that adults who sleep less than 7 hours may have more health problems. Teenagers need 8 to 10 hours and school-age children 9 to 12. For most adults, the 5- or 6-cycle bedtimes from the sleep calculator give 7.5 or 9 hours. The 4- and 3-cycle times are short and are best kept for an occasional night.
Habits that help
Keep the same wake time every day, including weekends. Get daylight in the morning, keep the bedroom dark, cool and quiet, and put screens away before bed. Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and large meals or alcohol late in the evening. Regular exercise helps, but not right before bed.
Entering times
Enter the wake hour from 0 to 23 and minutes from 0 to 59. The tool rejects values outside these ranges, such as an hour of 25 or a negative minute. The time to fall asleep can be 0 to 120 minutes and is usually 10 to 20. If you regularly need more than 30 minutes, or wake often during the night, talk to a health professional.
When to get help
A sleep calculator cannot fix a sleep problem. Loud snoring, gasping at night, daytime sleepiness despite enough time in bed, or long-lasting insomnia can be signs of conditions such as sleep apnea that need medical care. Shift workers may need a plan tailored to their schedule. Children and teenagers who seem tired during the day despite a regular bedtime should also be checked by a doctor.
Tips
- Pick a bedtime from the 5- or 6-cycle options.
- Keep your wake time steady.
- Adjust the fall-asleep minutes to match you.
- Treat the suggested times as a starting point.
