A time calculator adds or subtracts durations in hours and minutes without the mistakes of treating time as decimals. Formula: Minutes A = h1 x 60 + m1. Minutes B = h2 x 60 + m2. Result minutes = A+B or A-B. Convert abs(minutes) to hours and minutes with optional minus sign. 2 hours 30 minutes plus 1 hour 45 minutes is 4 hours 15 minutes.

How to use the time calculator
- Enter hours and minutes for time A.
- Enter hours and minutes for time B.
- Choose add or subtract.
- Read the result in hours and minutes.
How the time calculator works
The time calculator adds or subtracts two durations given in hours and minutes. It turns each into minutes (hours × 60 + minutes), adds or subtracts them, then splits the total back into hours and minutes. A negative answer is shown with a minus sign. The result is a duration, not a clock time, so it can exceed 24 hours.
Time calculator worked example
Add 2 hours 30 minutes and 1 hour 45 minutes: 150 + 105 = 255 minutes, which is 4 hours 15 minutes. Subtract them instead and the answer is 45 minutes. Reverse the order and the time calculator shows −0h 45m, telling you the second time was longer.
| Time A | Time B | Operation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2h 30m | 1h 45m | Add | 4h 15m |
| 2h 30m | 1h 45m | Subtract | 0h 45m |
| 1h 45m | 2h 30m | Subtract | -0h 45m |
| 7h 50m | 0h 25m | Add | 8h 15m |
| 10h 0m | 3h 20m | Subtract | 6h 40m |
Carrying minutes into hours
The usual mistake when adding time by hand is treating it like decimals. 50 minutes plus 25 minutes is 75 minutes, which is 1 hour 15 minutes, not 0.75 hours. Likewise, 1.5 hours is 1 hour 30 minutes, not 1 hour 50 minutes. Working in total minutes, as this tool does, avoids the problem.
Converting to decimal hours
Payroll and invoices often need decimal hours. Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 4 hours 15 minutes is 4.25 hours, and 6 hours 40 minutes is about 6.67 hours. Going the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60: 7.8 hours is 7 hours 48 minutes.
Common uses
- Adding up the length of several meetings, workouts or study sessions.
- Finding how much longer a task took than planned.
- Totaling travel legs on a trip.
- Checking a timesheet before converting to decimal hours.
To add more than two durations, add the first two, then enter the result as time A and add the next. For the time between two clock times or dates, a date or hours tool is a better fit, because it handles crossing midnight and calendar days.
Inputs and limits
Enter whole hours from zero upward and minutes from 0 to 59. The form limits minutes to 59, but the formula itself would still treat 90 minutes as 1 hour 30 minutes if a larger value were entered. Seconds are not supported; round them to the nearest minute first. Time zones and daylight saving time do not affect durations.
More everyday examples
A runner logs 45 minutes on Monday, 1 hour 10 minutes on Wednesday and 1 hour 35 minutes on Saturday. Add the first two to get 1 hour 55 minutes, then add 1 hour 35 minutes to get 3 hours 30 minutes for the week. A student who planned 6 hours of revision and has done 4 hours 20 minutes can subtract to see 1 hour 40 minutes left.
A video editor has a 2 hour 5 minute cut that must fit a 1 hour 50 minute slot. Subtracting shows 15 minutes to remove. A cook doubling a recipe can add two 1 hour 25 minute bake times only if they bake one after the other; in the same oven, time does not simply add. The time calculator handles the arithmetic, but you still need to decide which times are sequential and which overlap.
If you work in decimal hours, convert back before using the time calculator: 2.75 hours is 2 hours 45 minutes. Entering 2 and 75 is rejected, because the second box takes whole minutes from 0 to 59, not hundredths of an hour.
Tips
- Keep times in hours and minutes until the final step.
- Check the sign when subtracting.
- Use decimal hours only for pay or billing.
