hCG Doubling Calculator

Doubling time in hours = hours between tests x ln(2) / ln(second / first). It is the math of the two numbers you enter. It is not medical advice.

An hCG doubling calculator works out how many hours it would take an hCG level to double, based on two blood results and the time between them. Formula: Doubling time (hours) = hours between tests × ln(2) ÷ ln(second result ÷ first result). If a first result is 250 mIU/mL and a second, 48 hours later, is 500 mIU/mL, the hCG doubling calculator shows a doubling time of 48.0 hours, or 2.00 days.

How to use the hCG doubling calculator

  1. Enter the first quantitative hCG result in mIU/mL.
  2. Enter the second result from a later blood test.
  3. Enter the hours between the two blood draws.

The hCG doubling calculator returns the doubling time in hours and in days. If the second number is not higher than the first, it says so instead.

What formula does the hCG doubling calculator use?

It assumes the level grew at a steady exponential rate between the two tests. Doubling time is the hours between tests times ln(2), divided by ln(second ÷ first). When the second result is exactly twice the first, the doubling time equals the time between tests.

This is the math of the two numbers you enter, nothing more. It is not medical advice and it cannot say whether a pregnancy is healthy.

hCG doubling calculator worked example

Results from the hCG doubling calculator:

First result Second result Hours apart Doubling time
250 mIU/mL 500 mIU/mL 48 48.0 hours (2.00 days)
120 mIU/mL 300 mIU/mL 48 36.3 hours (1.51 days)
1,000 mIU/mL 1,500 mIU/mL 48 82.1 hours (3.42 days)

A faster rise gives a shorter doubling time. In the second example the level rose 2.5 times in 48 hours, so it doubled in about 36 hours.

What a quantitative hCG test measures

MedlinePlus explains that a quantitative hCG blood test measures the exact amount of the hormone in the blood. hCG is made during pregnancy and can be found in the blood as early as 10 days after conception. The test can help estimate the age of a pregnancy and, along with other tests, help in the diagnosis of problems such as ectopic pregnancy or possible miscarriage.

MedlinePlus also lists the expected ranges by week, and they are very wide. At 5 weeks, for example, the range runs from 217 to 8,245 mIU/mL. A single number says little on its own, which is why doctors often look at the change between tests.

Reading the result

How fast hCG should rise depends on how far along the pregnancy is and on the starting level, and labs can use different methods. The hCG doubling calculator does not compare your result to any normal range. Use the number as a way to understand the math your care team is using, and talk to your doctor about what your results mean. Seek care right away for heavy bleeding, severe pain or feeling faint.

Why two results are needed

A doubling time needs at least two numbers, because it is a rate of change. One result tells you the level at a moment in time. Two results a known number of hours apart tell you how quickly the level moved between them. Some care teams order a third test to see if the trend holds. If you have three results, you can run the calculator for the first and second, then for the second and third, and compare the two times. Write down the exact time of each blood draw so the hours you enter are accurate.

Tips for an accurate calculation

Use results from the same lab when you can, because different tests can give slightly different numbers. Enter the actual hours between blood draws, not just the days. Two tests 46 hours apart give a different answer from tests 48 hours apart. Our pregnancy due date calculator can help you see how many weeks along you are.

Questions about this calculator

How is hCG doubling time calculated?

Hours between tests × ln(2) ÷ ln(second ÷ first). The hCG doubling calculator does this for you.

What if my second hCG result is lower?

The tool shows a message instead of a doubling time. Talk to your doctor about any result.

What is a normal hCG doubling time?

It depends on the stage of pregnancy and starting level. The tool does not judge results; talk to your doctor.

Can I use home pregnancy test results?

No. Home tests are not quantitative. You need two quantitative blood results in mIU/mL.

Why do hCG ranges vary so much?

MedlinePlus lists wide ranges for each week. At 5 weeks the range is 217 to 8,245 mIU/mL.

Check the assumptions and units before relying on a result. Financial, tax and health estimates do not replace advice for your individual circumstances.
