No Tax on Tips Calculator

Federal qualified-tips deduction for tax years 2025 through 2028. Cap is $25,000. It falls by $100 for each $1,000 of MAGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint). Married taxpayers must file jointly. IRS section 224.

A no tax on tips calculator estimates the federal deduction for qualified tips and the income tax it saves for tax year 2026. Formula: Deduction = max(0, min(tips, $25,000) − $100 × each $1,000 of MAGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint)); saving = deduction × marginal rate. You can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips a year from 2025 through 2028. A single server with $18,000 of tips and $65,000 of MAGI deducts all $18,000 and saves about $3,960 in the 22% bracket.

How to use the no tax on tips calculator

  1. Enter the qualified tips you expect for the year, from your W-2, Form 1099 or your own tip records.
  2. Choose your filing status. Married couples must file a joint return to claim the deduction.
  3. Enter your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) and your marginal federal rate.
  4. If the tips come from your own business, pick “self-employed” and enter net business income before this deduction.

The no tax on tips calculator then shows the deduction after the cap, the deduction after the MAGI phaseout, and the estimated federal income tax saved.

What formula does the no tax on tips calculator use?

  • Capped tips = the smaller of qualified tips and $25,000.
  • Phaseout = $100 for each $1,000 of MAGI above $150,000 ($300,000 for a joint return).
  • Deduction = capped tips minus the phaseout, never below zero. For self-employed tips it also cannot exceed net business income.
  • Estimated saving = deduction × your marginal federal income tax rate.

The cap is per return, not per person, so a married couple who both earn tips still share one $25,000 limit.

No tax on tips calculator worked example

Here is the no tax on tips calculator with a single filer in the 22% bracket and $65,000 of MAGI, then a few changes:

Scenario Deduction Tax saved at 22%
$18,000 tips, MAGI $65,000 $18,000 $3,960
$30,000 tips, MAGI $65,000 $25,000 (cap) $5,500
$18,000 tips, MAGI $190,000 $14,000 $3,080
$18,000 tips, self-employed, net income $12,000 $12,000 $2,640

At $190,000 of MAGI the income is $40,000 over the line, so the deduction drops by 40 × $100 = $4,000. The tips are still subject to Social Security and Medicare tax.

Who qualifies for the tips deduction?

The IRS says the deduction covers voluntary cash or charged tips received in an occupation that customarily received tips on or before December 31, 2024, as listed by the Treasury. Tips must be paid by the customer, not set by the business, and shared tips through a tip pool can count. You need a Social Security number valid for work, and you can claim it whether or not you itemize, on Schedule 1-A of Form 1040.

The no tax on tips calculator does not check whether your job is on the Treasury list, so confirm that first.

What the deduction does not change

  • Payroll taxes: Social Security and Medicare still apply to all tips.
  • State income tax, unless your state adopts a similar rule.
  • Mandatory service charges, which are wages, not tips.
  • Tips above $25,000, which stay taxable.

Because the deduction lowers taxable income, the saving depends on your bracket. A worker in the 12% bracket with the same $18,000 of tips saves about $2,160, not $3,960. Run the no tax on tips calculator with both rates if your income sits near a bracket edge.

Records to keep for 2026

Keep daily tip logs, pay stubs and Form 4070 reports to your employer. For 2025 the IRS allowed transition relief for employers that could not list tips separately, but from 2026 expect tips to be shown on Form W-2 or Form 1099. A no tax on tips calculator estimate is only as good as the tip total you enter, so match it to these records before filing. For the related overtime rule, see the overtime calculator linked below; both deductions can be claimed on the same return.

Questions about this calculator

Are tips tax-free in 2026?

Not fully. For tax years 2025 through 2028 you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from federal taxable income. Social Security, Medicare and most state taxes still apply.

Does the $25,000 cap double for married couples?

No. The cap is $25,000 per return. Married couples must file jointly to claim it, and the phaseout starts at $300,000 of MAGI for a joint return.

Do I have to itemize to deduct tips?

No. The deduction is taken on Schedule 1-A and is available whether you take the standard deduction or itemize.

Can self-employed workers deduct tips?

Yes, if the tips are in a customarily tipped occupation, but the deduction cannot exceed the net income from that trade or business.

How much will no tax on tips save me?

Multiply the deduction by your marginal federal rate. $18,000 of deductible tips saves about $3,960 at 22% or $2,160 at 12%.
