How to use the ounces to pounds converter

  1. Enter the weight in ounces, for example 54.

Baby weight in pounds and ounces

The CDC classifies a birth weight under 2,500 g (about 5 lb 8 oz) as low birth weight.

Ounces and pounds on food packages

US food labels state the net weight in ounces, adding pounds and ounces when the package holds a pound or more; under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act they also give the metric quantity. A 32 oz label may read “NET WT 32 OZ (2 LB) 907 g”. Shipping carriers price by the pound and round up, so a 17 oz parcel bills as 2 lb. Use the pounds to ounces converter for the reverse and the ounces to grams converter for metric.

Meat, mail and bowling

Meat packages often list weight in ounces. A 24 oz pack of chicken is 1.5 lb. Recipes may ask for 1 lb of ground beef, so a 20 oz package leaves a 4 oz remainder. An ounces to pounds conversion makes it easy to split packs for the freezer.

Shipping prices also change at the pound mark. Many carriers price lightweight parcels by the ounce up to 15.99 oz and switch to pounds once a parcel reaches 16 oz, so weighing to the ounce can matter for small items.

Sports equipment uses both units. Bowling balls go up to 16 lb, and youth balls start around 6 lb, or 96 oz. Baseballs weigh about 5 oz, which is 0.31 lb.

Produce scales in US stores read in pounds, but recipes from food magazines may list ounces. Eight ounces of mushrooms is half a pound. To convert ounces to pounds in your head, divide by 16, or remember that 4 oz is a quarter pound and 12 oz is three quarters. An ounces to pounds conversion is also how nutrition labels on large packs relate the serving size to the total weight, which helps when you compare price per pound.
