Senior Deduction Calculator

Extra $6,000 per person age 65 or older for 2025 through 2028, on top of the existing additional standard deduction for age. Each $6,000 is reduced by 6% of MAGI over $75,000 ($150,000 joint). IRS enhanced deduction for seniors.

A senior deduction calculator estimates the extra $6,000 federal deduction for each person age 65 or older, after the income phaseout, for tax year 2026. Formula: Deduction per person = max(0, $6,000 − 6% × (MAGI − $75,000, or $150,000 joint)); total = per-person amount × people age 65+. A single filer age 65 with $80,000 of MAGI gets $5,700, because 6% of the $5,000 above $75,000 is $300.

How to use the senior deduction calculator

  1. Choose how many people on the return are age 65 or older by the end of the year: one or two.
  2. Pick your filing status. Married couples must file jointly to claim the deduction.
  3. Enter your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI).
  4. Read the deduction per person and the total extra deduction.

What formula does the senior deduction calculator use?

  • Base amount = $6,000 for each qualifying person.
  • Reduction = 6% of MAGI above $75,000, or above $150,000 on a joint return.
  • Deduction per person = $6,000 minus the reduction, never below zero.
  • Total = deduction per person × the number of people age 65 or older.

The senior deduction calculator applies the reduction to each person’s $6,000, which is how the IRS describes it, so a couple loses the same dollar amount from each half.

Senior deduction calculator worked example

Three returns run through the senior deduction calculator:

Return MAGI Per person Total
Single, one person 65+ $80,000 $5,700 $5,700
Joint, both 65+ $170,000 $4,800 $9,600
Single, one person 65+ $175,000 $0 $0

On the joint return, MAGI is $20,000 above $150,000. Six percent of that is $1,200, so each person’s $6,000 becomes $4,800. A single filer is fully phased out at $175,000 of MAGI.

How it stacks with the standard deduction

This is a new deduction for tax years 2025 through 2028. It is added on top of the existing additional standard deduction for age, which for 2026 is a separate amount set each year by the IRS, and it is available whether you itemize or not. You claim it on Schedule 1-A. Each person must have a valid Social Security number, and the return must include it.

A senior deduction calculator result is a deduction, not a credit. A $5,700 deduction saves $684 in the 12% bracket and $1,254 in the 22% bracket.

Does this mean no tax on Social Security?

No. The law did not change how Social Security benefits are taxed. The extra deduction lowers taxable income, which can offset the tax on benefits for many retirees, but benefits can still be partly taxable. Use the senior deduction calculator together with a benefit estimate to see the net effect, and remember that MAGI here includes items such as tax-exempt interest.

Age and filing status rules

You must be 65 or older by December 31 of the tax year. For tax year 2026 that generally means born before January 2, 1962. On a joint return where only one spouse is 65, choose “one” in the calculator, and the joint $150,000 phaseout line still applies. Married people who file separately cannot claim the deduction at all, and head of household filers use the $75,000 line like single filers.

If you turn 65 late in the year you still get the full amount; there is no proration by month. Your MAGI is your adjusted gross income plus a few items that are excluded for people living abroad, so for most retirees it equals AGI from Form 1040.

Planning around the phaseout

Because the phaseout is 6 cents per dollar, a Roth conversion, a capital gain or a large IRA withdrawal can shrink the deduction. If your MAGI is near $75,000 single or $150,000 joint, run the senior deduction calculator before and after the extra income. The loss of deduction adds to the tax on the extra income itself.

Questions about this calculator

Who gets the extra $6,000 senior deduction?

Each taxpayer age 65 or older with a valid Social Security number, for tax years 2025 through 2028. Married couples must file jointly.

Where does the senior deduction phase out?

It is reduced by 6% of MAGI over $75,000, or $150,000 on a joint return. A single filer reaches zero at $175,000; a joint return at $250,000.

Is the senior deduction in addition to the standard deduction?

Yes. It is added on top of the regular standard deduction and the existing additional amount for age 65, and itemizers can claim it too.

Does it end taxes on Social Security?

No. Benefit taxation rules did not change. The extra deduction can offset tax on part of the income, but benefits can still be taxable.

How much does the senior deduction save?

Multiply the deduction by your marginal rate. A $6,000 deduction saves $720 at 12% and $1,320 at 22%.
