Australian ABA Payment File Generator

This ABA file generator turns a supported CSV of Australian payees into a self-balanced direct-credit file for review. Enter your bank-issued direct-entry details and authorized trace account, then inspect the payee amounts before downloading payments.aba. The generated profile uses fixed 120-character records, credit code 50 and one balancing debit code 13. It follows the documented NAB Direct Link layout; it does not authorize payments, check account ownership or guarantee that a different bank will accept the file.

Australian ABA Payment File Generator

Build a self-balanced direct-credit ABA file from payee rows and your bank-issued direct-entry details, with fixed-length records and calculated totals.

Maximum file size: 25 MB per file. You can also drag files here.

Supported scope and limitations

The supported profile uses credit code 50 and one balancing debit code 13, following the documented NAB Direct Link layout. It is not a universal bank import guarantee. Bank-issued IDs, trace-account authority, institution abbreviations and actual bank imports must be verified separately. No payments are sent.

Examples contain invented demonstration data. Replace it before using any export.

Privacy: files are processed in your browser and are never uploaded.

Prepare the ABA file generator input

Your CSV needs the headers bsb, account, name and amount. An optional reference column supplies the payment reference. Use a hyphenated six-digit BSB such as 063-210, and keep account identifiers as text so a spreadsheet does not drop meaningful leading characters.

Amounts must be positive decimal values with up to two decimal places, without currency signs or thousands separators. The ABA file generator calculates cents as integer amounts and accumulates totals before writing the file. It does not combine payees automatically or determine whether an invoice has already been paid.

Enter bank details and create the file

  1. Replace the demonstration controls with your approved institution abbreviation, direct-entry user name and six-digit bank-issued user ID.
  2. Enter an appropriate description and processing date in YYYY-MM-DD form.
  3. Supply the authorized trace BSB, trace account and remitter name. Confirm that your bank permits this self-balanced profile.
  4. Select Choose file for the payee CSV, or paste it and select Process files.
  5. Review every displayed payee and amount, download payments.aba, and use your bank’s own review and authorization process.

The example controls are fictional format demonstrations, not bank account details you should use for a real payment run. File selection processes with the current controls, so enter and verify them first or process again after changing them. No payment is submitted by this ABA file generator.

Worked example: a single direct credit

bsb,account,name,amount,reference
063-210,123456,Ana Example,12.50,INVOICE1

Using fictional demonstration details, this row produces a 12.50 credit entry for Ana Example and a 12.50 balancing debit against the trace account. The trailer has equal credit and debit totals and counts two detail records. There is still one payee row in the preview; the added balancing debit is a file-accounting requirement for this supported profile.

The output consists of a descriptive header, detail records, a trailer and CRLF record endings. The ABA file generator checks its fixed record lengths before offering a download. That proves a narrow structural property; it cannot prove that a BSB belongs to the intended payee, an account is active or a user ID is authorized for your banking service.

Field lengths and common rejected inputs

Fixed-width payment files have stricter text limits than a spreadsheet. This profile allows up to 26 characters for the direct-entry user name, 32 for a payee name, 18 for a reference and 16 for a remitter. Unsupported characters and overlong values are rejected rather than silently truncated. Accented or non-Latin payee names may require a bank-approved transliteration.

Amounts with three decimal places, empty names, invalid dates and account fields outside the supported layout also stop generation. Verify any formatting change against the original payment instructions. Do not shorten a name or reference in a way that makes the destination or reconciliation ambiguous simply to satisfy a field limit.

Bank-specific review and sensitive data

The official NAB file-format guide describes the receiving layout. This ABA file generator supports one direct-credit, self-balanced profile rather than every institution’s debit, payroll or exception workflow. Actual bank imports have not been verified here. Follow your bank’s latest specification, test process and payment authorization controls.

Payee bytes are processed locally in your browser. The generator does not save a payee database, log payment rows or send remittance emails. Keep downloaded files in your normal restricted payment workflow and clear the page when finished on a shared device. Use CSV comparison to examine changes between two source payment lists, or inspect CSV encoding when text looks damaged. Neither step replaces independent checking of the authorized payee details.

Common ABA file generator errors and how to fix them

When the ABA file generator cannot use a file, it stops with one clear message instead of producing a half-finished download. These are the problems people run into most often, with the fix for each:

  • A required field or column is missing. The CSV needs bsb, account, name and amount columns.
  • Review ABA field lengths, allowed characters, bank IDs and trace-account details. A BSB is not in 000-000 form, an account number is longer than nine characters, the user ID is not six digits or the institution is not a three-letter code.
  • Use a decimal amount with no currency symbol and at most two decimal places. Amounts must be positive, such as 125.50.
  • Use a valid date in the selected format, with an end after its start. The processing date is not a real YYYY-MM-DD date. Leave it blank to use today.

Privacy: the ABA file generator runs in your browser

ABA file generator processing happens with JavaScript in a background worker on this page. Your file is not uploaded to a FileFix server, and the results you download are created in your browser’s memory. Bank and payment files contain account numbers and amounts, so keeping them off third-party servers matters. When you finish on a shared computer, clear the selection or close the tab.

Questions about this tool

Does generating an ABA file send money?

No. It creates a downloadable file only. Your bank controls import, review, authorization and actual payment submission.

Why is there a balancing debit?

The supported profile totals the direct credits and adds one transaction-code 13 debit against the authorized trace account, making the file self-balanced.

Can I use the example banking details?

No. They are fictional format examples. Real files need bank-issued direct-entry details and an account you are authorized to use.

Will the file work at every Australian bank?

That has not been verified. The generator follows a documented NAB Direct Link-style credit profile; your bank may require another layout or balancing behavior.

Are payees automatically deduplicated?

No. Each accepted source row becomes a credit. Check repeated rows and prior payment runs yourself before bank submission.

Review the supported formats and limitations before using an output file. File processing happens in your browser.
