Convert EndNote to BibTeX when you have an exported reference list and need a .bib file for a LaTeX bibliography. This EndNote to BibTeX converter accepts tagged ENW text and a common EndNote XML journal-record subset; it does not open an EndNote library database. Review the authors, titles and years, then inspect the actual entry keys in references.bib before citing them. The preview uses normalized record identifiers that can differ from exported citation keys. Download the source-and-mapping report to compare the original records. The report helps you compare fields that transfer with details that require manual review, especially for specialized reference types.
Choose the right EndNote export
An EndNote library database and an exported reference file serve different purposes. A database may depend on associated folders, indexing and attachments. This EndNote to BibTeX converter reads an ENW or supported XML export instead, so your first step is to export the selected references from the source application. It accepts .enw, .xml and .txt input, provided the contents match the supported reference syntax.
Tagged ENW records commonly include lines such as %0 for the reference type, %A for an author and %T for a title. The ENW mapping uses Citation.js. The XML route reads a narrower common journal-record structure, including author, title, year, journal, volume, issue, pages and an electronic resource identifier where present.
How to convert EndNote to BibTeX
- Export a small, representative selection of references first. Choose the ENW or supported XML file with Choose file, or paste its text.
- Check Input encoding. Start with automatic detection, then select the original encoding if accented names look wrong.
- Select Process files for pasted input or changed options. The example control supplies a tagged journal reference.
- Inspect the reference preview and any missing-field warnings.
- Download
references.bibandsource-and-mapping.json. Compare both against your original export.
File selection starts local processing. No DOI request or external bibliographic enrichment runs in the background. The source report contains the original exported text alongside normalized records, so keep that report as carefully as the bibliography if the export contains private notes or local attachment paths.
Example: a tagged journal record
%0 Journal Article
%A García, Ana
%T Coastal observations
%D 2024
%J Example Journal
The sample becomes a journal-style BibTeX entry with the title, author, year and journal mapped from the tagged fields. Its normalized preview identifier is based on García and 2024. The BibTeX exporter may also append title text, so the sample entry key is Garcia2024Coastal. The accented author name remains bibliographic data even when its identifier uses ASCII characters.
Numeric suffixes distinguish repeated normalized preview identifiers. Do not assume those identifiers are identical to, or guarantee the uniqueness of, the exported BibTeX keys. Inspect the downloaded entries before adding citations or combining bibliographies. The EndNote to BibTeX converter does not perform DOI-based deduplication or authoritative record verification.

Use the bibliography without losing context
Save the .bib alongside your LaTeX project and use the exact entry keys from the downloaded bibliography in citation commands, rather than copying a normalized preview identifier. Your bibliography processor and style determine which fields appear in the finished document. A field present in a file can still be ignored by a particular style, so inspect the compiled bibliography rather than checking only whether conversion produced a download.
If your source export is RIS, use RIS to BibTeX conversion instead of pretending that it is ENW. For PubMed NBIB exports, NBIB to BibTeX follows a different source mapping. Those formats may describe similar papers, but their field syntax is not interchangeable.
Specialized types, attachments and troubleshooting
The XML subset should not be treated as a complete mapping of every EndNote type. Books, reports, legal references, theses and custom institutional fields need particular care if they arrive through XML: the implemented path normalizes common records as journal articles. Prefer a supported tagged export when appropriate and compare the source report before accepting the result.
Attached PDFs are not bundled into the output, local file paths are not relocated, and identifiers are not verified against a publisher. Malformed exports or empty reference lists stop conversion. A record with no title may be reported for review rather than secretly filled with a guessed title.
Consult the official EndNote XML export instructions for the source workflow. After conversion, format the BibTeX file if you need consistent entry separation while preserving custom fields and macros. Keep your library and original export as the authoritative sources until you have reviewed the compiled references.
Common EndNote to BibTeX converter errors and how to fix them
When the EndNote to BibTeX converter cannot use a file, it stops with one clear message instead of producing a half-finished download. These are the problems people run into most often, with the fix for each:
- The reference file could not be parsed. Check record boundaries and the selected format. The file is neither EndNote tagged text (%0, %T lines) nor EndNote XML. A formatted bibliography copied from Word fails here.
- The file contains too many records for this browser tool. Up to 10,000 records are converted at once.
- A warning that a record has no title The entry converts, but it needs a title before you cite it.
- Accents or symbols look wrong That is an encoding mismatch, not a structural error. Choose the real source encoding in Input encoding and process again instead of editing the output by hand.
Privacy: the EndNote to BibTeX converter runs in your browser
EndNote to BibTeX converter processing happens with JavaScript in a background worker on this page. Your file is not uploaded to a FileFix server, and the results you download are created in your browser’s memory. Unpublished reading lists and draft bibliographies stay on your computer. When you finish on a shared computer, clear the selection or close the tab.
For the underlying format rules, see the BibTeX format description. The EndNote to BibTeX converter follows the subset described on this page rather than every optional feature in those documents.

Questions about this tool
Can I open an ENL library database here?
No. Export the references to supported ENW text or XML first. The tool does not open the EndNote database or its associated data folder.
Does the XML route support every EndNote reference type?
No. It implements a common journal-record subset and normalizes those records as journal articles. Specialized types and custom fields require source-report review.
Will attached PDFs move into the LaTeX project?
No. The output is bibliographic text and a mapping report; it does not bundle or relocate attachments.
Why did the citation key lose an accented letter?
Normalized preview identifiers use alphanumeric author/year text. Exported BibTeX keys can also include title text. Copy the exact downloaded entry key; the author field can retain its accented spelling.
Does this verify DOI or publication details?
No. It converts local exported data without external lookup or enrichment. Confirm bibliographic accuracy separately.
Review the supported formats and limitations before using an output file. File processing happens in your browser.
